Go Ara Reveals Her Perspective On Viewership Ratings For “Hwarang”

Go Ara recently sat down for an interview in honor of KBS2’s “Hwarang,” which ended on February 21.

In the drama, the actress played Aro, the highly independent and sole woman in the group of elite youth known as “hwarang.” While it started off at the top, the production itself eventually had smaller viewership ratings in comparison to its competition, which included dramas like “Defendant” and “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People.”

Regarding this matter, Go Ara revealed, “I don’t necessarily think I really dwell on ratings. I think the actual idea of working together [with the cast and crew] is more meaningful.” She went on to say that she places more significance on companionship and understanding her fellow cast and crew members, although there may be other people who are more preoccupied with ratings.

“[‘Hwarang’] has its own unique color as a production, and since viewers have stated they enjoyed watching it, I don’t want to be limited to only focusing on things like [ratings].,” Go Ara explained. “I participated in this drama because I wished to have fun while filming a historical drama and wanted to capture the passion of young people, so I hope that [‘Hwarang’] won’t only be talked about in terms of numbers.”

The actress also talked about the difficulties encountered while filming because of the period-specific clothing, and portraying Aro as accurately as possible in the context of the Silla era. She explained that she was a little disappointed at how Aro had to be portrayed within the restrictions of the historical time period, but understood the necessity.

Go Ara promised to return to either the big or small screen with another fun production, and that she has several offers that she is carefully considering at the moment.

“The List” Picks Actors Who Matched Perfectly With Their Webtoon Roles

On February 20, the tvN show “The List 2017” picked eight actors who fully embodied their original webtoon characters in the onscreen adaptations.

8. Ahn Jae Hyun

This actor is recently making headlines with his sweet antics toward wife Ku Hye Sun on “Newlywed Diary” and “New Journey to the West 3,” but he made his first onscreen debut in the film adaptation of the webtoon “Fashion King.” His model-like height and good looks made him a perfect fit for the king of the school, Kim Won Ho.

7. Lee Joon Gi

Lee Joon Gi was hugely popular in his role as the titular Joseon-era vampire in “Scholar Who Walks The Night.” Although historical fantasies can present a challenge to actors, Lee Joon Gi fully committed to his role and secured his ever-growing fanbase due to his portrayal of the key character.

6. Kim So Hyun

Although Kim So Hyun gained attention recently for her performance as the young queen of Goryeo in tvN’s “Goblin,” she also starred in the 2016 drama “Bring It On, Ghost.” The popularity of the original webtoon and Kim So Hyun’s commitment to her character, including in the action scenes, garnered her No. 6 on the list.

5. Kim Sung Kyun and Ma Dong Seok

These veteran actors took the tie for the movie adaptation of webtoon “Neighbor,” where Ma Dong Seok was noted for synchronizing well with his character in both looks and performance. Kim Sung Kyun played a serial killer in the same movie to equal acclaim.

4. Kim Go Eun and Park Hae Jin

These two actors showed off their chemistry as the leads in tvN’s “Cheese in the Trap.” Park Hae Jin’s embrace of the role was so perfectly in sync that he will be playing the character again in the upcoming film adaptation. Meanwhile, “Cheese in the Trap” put Kim Go Eun, a previously respected but little-known actress, on the map, from which she would go on to star in hits such as “Goblin.”

3. Lee Sung Min and Im Siwan

One of tvN’s early and most surprising hits, these two actors moved audiences in the highly relatable drama adaptation of “Incomplete Life (Misaeng”). Lee Sung Min’s performance was a worthy addition to his veteran career, while idol actor Im Siwan would go on to be cast in many other high-profile projects as a result of his work in the drama.

2. Kim Soo Hyun

Even before “My Love From the Star” propelled him to Hallyu stardom, Kim Soo Hyun had built up popularity in roles like in the 2013 action-comedy film adaptation of “Secretly, Greatly,” where he played a North Korean spy posing as the village idiot.

1. Park Hae Il

Park Hae Il

The top spot went to Park Hae Il, who played a corrupt detective in the 2010 film adaptation of the mystery thriller webtoon “Moss.” His commitment to his performance in the film, which followed his character from high school to old age, made him a perfect fit for the lead role.

Dean Reveals What Happens When He Tries To Talk About Music With Zico And Crush

On February 21, singer-songwriter Dean appeared on the MBC Standard FM radio show “Kangta’s Starry Night.”

Dean, who first started working as a songwriter when he was 20 and has worked with K-pop artists like EXO, VIXX, and Lee Hi, was asked whether he thought his success was due to natural talent or hard work.

“I think it’s 50-50,” he answered. “If you say that it’s because of talent, then people who dream of working in music some day often feel discouraged. I was like that too. I think that although there is a natural sense [for music], I prefer to say it was due to hard work.”

Kangta noted Dean seemed to enjoy talking about music. “As I started to work in music, I’ve started analyzing music more than enjoying it,” Dean said. “So I’m working on that. I like listening to music, so I try to listen to enjoy it first and analyze it later.”

When asked about mentors, he said, “Rather than a mentor, I get inspired by the producers around me that I’ve worked with for a long time. They’re not famous. But all my past works I made together with them.”

Upon being asked about his close friends Zico and Crush (the three of them collaborated on “Bermuda Triangle” late last year), he added, “You said that we must talk about music a lot, but I think we often start off with complaining about our own hardships with our work. We’ll say something like, ‘This is so hard,’ and then the conversation will get sidetracked into talk about girls. We’ll touch on music again and then we’ll go out drinking and it’ll end there.”

About his future plans, Dean said that he wanted to collaborate with indie artist Hyukoh and hold a solo concert when he has enough solo work stacked up.
